How are patients referred?

It is important that anyone who might benefit from a cochlear implant is referred as early as possible.

Formal referral is typically undertaken by a patient’s ENT Consultant, although anyone involved with a patient who may be a candidate for implantation should raise the issue, so that the assessment process can begin if appropriate.

Each cochlear implant centre has its own referral criteria and mechanism, and if in doubt, you should check with your local centre. Contact details for all UK cochlear implant programmes are given on the British Cochlear Implant Group website.
