What about rehabilitation?
The rehabilitation programme for each patient is developed on an individual basis.
Children on the Nottingham programme are visited regularly by a team teacher of the deaf and speech and language therapist, to provide support, monitor progress and provide advice to the family and local professionals as appropriate.
For many children, the goal of implantation will be to give them the opportunity to learn to hear and talk. For others, it may be to increase their quality of life through giving them increased awareness of environmental sounds.
Adults are given hearing therapy and speech and language therapy support in order to help them adjust to the new signal, and obtain the maximum possible benefit from their cochlear implant system.
