What is a Baha?

We hear sound naturally in two ways: air conduction and bone conduction. Conventional hearing aids amplify and deliver sounds to the ear canal through an earmould via air conduction. A Baha works differently by taking advantage of our natural ability to hear via bone conduction and re-routes sound.

How does it work?

There are three components to the Baha system:

baha components

  • A sound processor to pick up sound vibrations
  • A connecting abutment which transfers the amplified sound into mechanical vibrations from the Baha sound processor to the implant
  • A small titanium implant which is placed in the bone behind the ear, where it fuses with the living bone. This implant transfers the sound vibrations directly to the cochlea via bone conduction.
