We discovered that Maddison had been born deaf at her newborn screening. It was such a bombshell at the time, but we're lucky that her deafness was picked up at an early age as she's now age-appropriate.
Since implantation she has developed speech so rapidly that she's near the top of her class at school. Before the operation she couldn't hear any speech whatsoever. Now she can listen to the birds singing in the trees and speak to all her friends and family. She's a bubbly little chatterbox now! It's been the best decision we've ever made.
We've been offered a cochlear implant for her right side but she's making good progress, so we're holding back for now.
